Are Shampoo Bars Safe for Colored Hair?

Yes! Our shampoo bars are safe for colored hair, daily shampooing or chemically treated hair. Our shampoo bars do contain sulfates, the cleaning agent known to make your shampoo sudsy. Sulfates remove grime and dead skin cells from your skin and scalp, but they are also known to reduce the longevity of artificial coloring in the hair – causing people with colored hair to avoid these shampoos in order to prolong the longevity of the dye.

However, not all sulfates are created equal, and we use a less harsh sulfate to make our safe synthetic bars lather to give you the best of both worlds without stripping your color.

Our shampoo bars are created with the safe synthetic ingredient, Sodium Coco Sulfate, a mix of fatty acids found in coconut oil and lauric acid (a naturally occurring substance from coconut milk and palm kernel oil). It is milder than Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or Sodium Lauryl Sulfate because it is derived from coconuts, not petroleum. It also still produces a rich, foamy lather that we are all accustomed to. SCS has a natural balance of fatty acids that your hair and scalp desire. We also enrich our shampoo bars with other natural oils for your hair's optimal rich acid profile. Your hair is getting the best of both worlds because it effectively dissolves dirt and grease but in a gentler and more mild fashion.

The color fade between sulfate-free shampoo and our Sodium Coco Sulfate formula is identical. The longevity of the color will also depend on the brand of dye, what your hair is exposed to (ex: chlorine and hot water), and how often you wash your hair.

Because sulfates are not for everyone, we also carry a natural shampoo bar such as our rosemary apple cider bar, that does not contain sulfates. To learn more about the difference between safe synthetic and natural shampoo bars read more here.
