Argan Oil vs Jojoba Oil for Hair

When it comes to hair care, jojoba oil and argan oil are two of the most revered natural oils, each offering unique benefits. Whether you’re looking to add moisture, prevent dandruff, protect your hair, or promote growth, these oils can enhance your hair care routine. This article explores the properties and benefits of jojoba and argan oil, helping you decide which is best for your hair needs.

What is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil is a staple in many beauty products due to its moisturising and nourishing properties. Extracted from the seeds of the jojoba plant, this oily wax gained popularity in the 1970s and continues to be a favourite in cosmetics today. You'll find it in lipsticks, moisturisers, face creams, and hair care products.

Benefits for Hair

  • Moisture Retention: Jojoba oil forms a protective layer on the hair shaft, preventing moisture loss.
  • No Build-up: It rinses out easily, avoiding unwanted build-up on your scalp and hair.

What is Argan Oil?

Argan oil, often referred to as "liquid gold," is sourced from the nuts of the argan tree native to Morocco. For centuries, this labour-intensive oil has been used by Moroccans for both culinary and cosmetic purposes. Its popularity in hair care products has surged due to its ability to enhance scalp health and add shine.

Argan Oil Benefits for Hair

  • Scalp Health: Argan oil is known for improving overall scalp health.
  • Vibrant Shine: It imparts a beautiful, vibrant shine to the hair.
  • Hair Loss Remedy: Some use argan oil to combat hair loss.

Comparing Benefits: Jojoba Oil vs Argan Oil

Both oils offer unique advantages that can elevate your hair care routine. Here’s a quick comparison:

  • Moisture: Jojoba oil is excellent for moisture retention without build-up.
  • Scalp Health and Shine: Argan oil is perfect for improving scalp health and adding shine.
  • Versatility: Both oils are versatile in beauty products, but their specific properties cater to different needs.

What Are the Benefits of each one?

After countless hours of research on hair serums and oils, you've likely come across the names jojoba oil and argan oil. Both are renowned for their ability to add moisture, prevent dandruff, and protect hair. But which one should you choose? Below, we explore the unique benefits of each oil.

Moisture and Hydration

Keeping Hair Hydrated

Jojoba and argan oils are both exceptional for maintaining hydration in your hair, especially beneficial for those with dry hair types.

Jojoba Oil:

  • Moisture Lock: Jojoba oil not only moisturises your hair from root to tip but also locks in that moisture, providing long-lasting protection against environmental aggressors.

Argan Oil:

  • Cuticle Lubrication: Rich in essential fatty acids, argan oil lubricates the hair cuticle, reducing dryness and making your hair shinier and softer.

Dandruff Prevention

Combatting Scalp Issues

If you suffer from an itchy, flaky, or dry scalp, both jojoba and argan oils can offer relief.

Jojoba Oil:

  • Hydration: With palmitic acid, jojoba oil conditions and hydrates your scalp, reducing the likelihood of dandruff. Apply a few drops before shampooing or use it post-wash for deep conditioning.

Argan Oil:

  • Inflammation Reduction: Argan oil reduces scalp inflammation, alleviating dryness and itchiness. Apply directly to your scalp and massage in for the best results.

Hair Protection

Guarding Against Damage

Jojoba and argan oils are also known for their protective qualities, shielding hair from various types of damage.

Heat Protection:

  • Jojoba Oil: Ideal for those who use heat styling tools, jojoba oil helps protect hair from potential heat damage.
  • Argan Oil: Can withstand higher temperatures, making it perfect for heat protection.

Colour Preservation:

  • Jojoba Oil: Helps maintain the vibrancy of coloured hair, extending the time between touch-ups and promoting healthier hair.

Sun Damage:

  • Argan Oil: Protects hair from sun damage. A few drops before sun exposure can prevent your hair from becoming brittle and dry.

Promoting Hair Growth

Stimulating Hair Growth

Both oils can aid in promoting hair growth by cleansing and maintaining scalp health.

Jojoba Oil:

  • Pore Cleansing: Jojoba oil helps dissolve dirt and sebum buildup on your scalp, which can clog hair follicles and hinder growth. Regular use can encourage longer, faster hair growth.

How to Use These Oils on Hair

There are several ways to incorporate jojoba and argan oil into your hair care routine, depending on your preferences and the effects you want to achieve. Here are some methods to apply these oils to your hair:

Protective Spray (Argan Oil):

  • Use an argan oil spray to protect your hair against heat-related damage, such as split ends and breakage.
  • Before styling with heat tools, spray the mid-shaft and ends of each strand to add a light protective layer to the hair cuticles.

Boosting Moisture (Jojoba Oil):

  • While jojoba oil works well on its own, you can enhance the moisturising effects by adding it to other products.
  • Mix a few drops into your shampoo or conditioner before applying as usual.
  • Add jojoba oil to leave-in conditioners or styling creams to further define and enhance your hair.

Hair Mask (Argan Oil):

  • An argan oil hair mask can keep your scalp healthy and strengthen your hair.
  • Mix argan oil with a hair mask product or use it alone.
  • Apply to damp hair from root to tip, wrap your hair in a shower cap, and leave it on for five minutes to overnight.
  • Rinse out in the shower for fuller, more vibrant hair.

In your Shampoo and Conditioner:

  • For those who prefer using shampoos over oils, Parrotfish offers an argan oil shampoo and argan oil conditioner.
  • This combination provides deep hydration and nourishment, utilising the moisturising properties of argan oil.

Best. Duo. EVER.

My family and I are obsessed with the smell, texture, and softness that it leaves our hair after washing. As a blonde, I had to wash my hair once/day or once/two days due to my hair appearing oily after using liquid products, which would then aggravate my scalp; now, I wash my hair once every 3-4 days because my hair maintains shine and softness. For blondies and gray/silver-headed beauties, do yourself a favor and try this pairing.

Best shampoo and conditioner ever

I came back for more because I
love how it makes my hair feel. It controls frizz and also makes it feel soft. I was afraid if I didn’t stock up a little I would run out .

Actually Works!

This is the only purple Shampoo I have tried that’s actually able to lighten my hair! I have thick hair in a darker blonde color, and normally after using purple shampoo it looks the same as before. With this one, my hair stylist noticed my hair was lighter, and I didn’t even bring it up! And yes, I follow instructions!

Good product

I purchased the purple shampoo and conditioner bars & am very pleased with the results. It has definitely toned down the yellowing of my gray hair and does not dry my hair out. I will be ordering again for sure.
