How to Save Your Natural Soap Bar from Getting Waterlogged
Natural soap bars offer a range of benefits, from nourishing ingredients to eco-friendly packaging. However, they're more prone to becoming waterlogged than commercial soaps. This happens because natural soaps often lack synthetic preservatives and hardeners found in commercial soaps, making them more sensitive to moisture. When natural soap bars absorb too much water, they can become a soft, mushy mess that dissolves too quickly. But with the proper care, you can keep your soap bar firm and long-lasting. Here's how to prevent your soap bar from getting waterlogged and enjoy its full potential.
Why Are Natural Soap Bars More Prone to Waterlogging?
Natural soap bars are crafted using oils, butters, and other plant-based ingredients, giving them rich, moisturizing qualities. Unlike commercial soaps, which often contain synthetic detergents and hardening agents, natural soaps rely on the saponification process and natural glycerin to create a gentle cleanse. This lack of artificial additives makes natural soaps more susceptible to absorbing water, especially if they're left in damp conditions. The key to extending the life of your natural soap bar lies in proper storage and care.
Tips to Prevent Your Soap Bar from Getting Waterlogged
1. Use a Soap Dish with Drainage
One of the most effective ways to prevent your soap from becoming waterlogged is using a soap dish with proper drainage. Look for soap dishes with ridges, holes, or slats, allowing water to drain away from the bar. This ensures that your soap dries out ultimately between uses, reducing the chance of becoming soft and soggy.
2. Keep Soap Bars Out of Direct Water Flow
When placing your soap bar in the shower or by the sink, ensure it's out of the direct water flow. Constant exposure to running water will cause the soap to dissolve more quickly. Instead, store your soap in a dry area of the shower or sink, away from splashes.
3. Elevate Your Soap Bar
If you don't have a soap dish with drainage, you can elevate your soap bar by placing it on a sponge, loofah, or a soap saver pad. These items allow air to circulate the soap, helping it dry faster and preventing waterlogging.
4. Rotate Your Soap Bars
Related Products
If you use multiple soap bars, consider rotating them. You can extend the life of all your soap bars by giving each bar a chance to dry out completely between uses. This is especially useful if you use different soaps for different purposes, such as one for the body and another for the face.
5. Cut Your Soap Bar into Smaller Pieces
Consider cutting your soap bar into smaller pieces for easier handling and longer-lasting soap. This way, you can use one piece at a time while the others stay dry and ready. Smaller pieces dry out faster, reducing the risk of them becoming waterlogged.
6. Store Soap Bars in a Cool, Dry Place
After use, store your soap bars in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving them in humid environments, such as the shower, where they can absorb moisture from the air. Instead, store them in a well-ventilated area where they can air out between uses.
Can I Save a Soap Bar If It's Already Waterlogged?
Yes! If your soap bar is already waterlogged, there are a few simple steps you can take to save it:
- Remove Excess Water: Gently blot the soap with a towel to remove as much excess water as possible.
- Let It Air Dry: Place the soap bar on a soap dish with good drainage, or elevate it on a soap saver pad or sponge. Please leave it in a well-ventilated area to dry out completely. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight, which can cause the soap to dry too quickly and crack.
- Cut It into Pieces: If the soap is still soft, consider cutting it into smaller pieces. Smaller pieces dry faster and can be used individually while the rest of the soap dries.
By taking these steps, you can restore your soap bar to its original firmness and extend its lifespan.
Benefits of Using a Natural Soap Bar
- Gentle on Skin: Natural soap bars are free from harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances, making them ideal for sensitive skin.
- Eco-Friendly: Natural soaps often come in minimal, plastic-free packaging, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.
- Nourishing Ingredients: Packed with natural oils, butters, and essential oils, these soaps provide deep hydration and nourishment for your skin.
- Supports Small Businesses: Many natural soap bars are handcrafted by small businesses, allowing you to support local artisans and makers.
Conclusion
While caring for a natural soap bar might seem like a lot of work, it's more about changing habits than anything else. Once you use your soap bar regularly and develop a routine, these care tips will become second nature. The benefits of using a natural soap bar—gentle, nourishing, and eco-friendly—are worth the small effort to keep it dry and long-lasting.

from 196 reviewsI have been wanting to switch to bar shampoo to lower my plastic use and love this option. It works just as well maybe better thank liquid shampoo.
I am thrilled to have a case specifically for my shampoo and conditioner bars when I travel. No more plastic baggies! It is a perfect addition to my travel cases.
I found this Nourishing Shampoo Bar at our local HEB Central Market. I wasn't sure what to expect but was super impressed after I tried this shampoo bar. I love the mint scent and that it was effective at cleansing my hair and scalp. I loved the soft feeling afterward. I plan to buy the conditioner bar the next time that I run to HEB Central Market.
Wow! This is my first experience with shampoo in a bar, and I am a big fan. It lathers easily and feels good on your scalp. It rinses out easily and left my hair feeling soft and moisturized when it dried. I like how convenient and small the packaging is, and I like that it claims to replace up to three shampoo bottles.
These bars smell amazing- create beautiful lather while being non toxic! AMAZING
My family and I are obsessed with the smell, texture, and softness that it leaves our hair after washing. As a blonde, I had to wash my hair once/day or once/two days due to my hair appearing oily after using liquid products, which would then aggravate my scalp; now, I wash my hair once every 3-4 days because my hair maintains shine and softness. For blondies and gray/silver-headed beauties, do yourself a favor and try this pairing.
I have to admit I was skeptical about how this product would preform. I had never used a shampoo bar before. I have very dry long fine hair. A little goes a long way. It foamed up in a great consistency and made my hair feel clean and soft. Gentle yet effective. Great for travel and great for the environment. Smells great and made my hair look (shiny) and feel great.
I came back for more because I
love how it makes my hair feel. It controls frizz and also makes it feel soft. I was afraid if I didn’t stock up a little I would run out .
I’m always looking for clean and natural products that are safe for me and Mother Nature. I was happy this soap foamed, but it’s not big enough for the cost. I have a lot of hair, but only wash it once a week. Fingers crossed it lasts long.
I love how this product lathers in my hair and leaves it feelings super clean and strong! I have tried other shampoo bars and this one is definitely one of my favorites.
this is a great concept and product. no plastic bottle and clean, natural ingredients. there's nothing not to like about it. i hope more companies start doing this. i wish there were more kinds of products like this so i love it but it's very niche and not easy to come by in a regular store.
i have never seen or tried any product like this, i really liked the smell of the peppermint and it did a nice job cleaning my hair, i found this at a local store
I recently found the Peppermint Nourishing Shampoo Bar by Parrotfish at our local Central Market. I was both intrigued and skeptical because many of us don't associate anything in soap bar form with good for our hair. However, Parrotfish figured it out and this is the coolest thing ever! Not only do I love it for the way that it improves my scalp health, scent, and makes my hair shiny, but let me tell you that parents need to know about this! My son is so messy with shampoo and conditioner. I don't even know what he does in there but he goes through liquid shampoo and conditioner like crazy. I also find it spilled. These shampoo and conditioner bars are great for him! I don't know why I didn't know about these sooner, but now I am hooked! My son loves them too because they are so easy to use. He also loves the peppermint scent! Definitely look for these and give them a try!
I really liked the Nourishing Shampoo Bar by Parrotfish. . My only complaint is it is a little pricey. I would like to try the conditioner as well.
I have never tried using a bar form shampoo but this works. The clean ingredients was a plus and my hair felt fabulous after. Who knew this would work so well?! It is pricey so perhaps it will be an occasional treat!
