What Does Purple Shampoo Do To Brown Hair?

If you've lightened your locks with techniques like balayage or ombre, or simply find yourself battling brassy tones due to frequent dyeing, purple shampoo could be just what you need. In this article, we’ll explore how purple shampoo works wonders by neutralizing brassiness, boosting vibrancy, and preserving your hair color. Plus, we'll walk you through the best ways to use it to keep your brown hair looking as fresh and vibrant as the day you left the salon.

Benefits On Brown Hair

Neutralizes Brassiness

Purple shampoo serves as an essential tool for brown hair that has been lightened through processes like balayage, ombre, or frequent dyeing. Over time, treated brown hair tends to reveal unwanted warm and brassy undertones as the color fades and strands become dry and damaged. The purple pigment in the shampoo is crucial for counteracting these warm tones because it sits opposite yellow on the color wheel, effectively neutralizing brassiness and maintaining the richness of brown hair.

Enhances Vibrancy and Shine

Regular use of purple shampoo on brown hair not only helps in removing unwanted warm tones but also enhances the overall vibrancy of the hair. It adds a luminous shine and helps keep the color looking fresh and rich, preventing the dullness that often comes with color-treated hair.

Preserves Hair Color

By mitigating color fade, purple shampoo extends the life of the dye within the hair. It doesn't lighten the hair but maintains its depth and richness by subtly toning down excess warmth. This makes it an ideal choice for those looking to keep their brown hair vibrant without frequent re-coloring.

How to Use Purple Shampoo on Brown Hair

Application

Start by thoroughly wetting your hair. Apply purple shampoo mainly to the lighter, brassy sections of your hair, which typically are the ends or the lower lengths. Gently massage the shampoo into these areas to ensure even coverage.

Waiting Time

Leave the shampoo in your hair for about five minutes. This duration allows the purple pigments sufficient time to neutralize brassy tones effectively.

Rinsing

Rinse your hair with cool water after the waiting period. Using cool water helps close the hair cuticles, locking in the pigment and enhancing the overall shine of your hair.

Conditioning

Follow up with a deep conditioner suitable for color-treated hair. Apply it generously, especially focusing on areas prone to dryness or damage. Leave the conditioner in your hair for 3 to 10 minutes, depending on your hair’s needs, to provide deep nourishment and conditioning.

Final Rinse and Detangling

Thoroughly rinse out the conditioner. Towel dry your hair gently and carefully detangle with a wide-tooth comb to minimize breakage.

Leave-in Treatment

For additional shine and protection, especially if you use heat styling tools, apply a leave-in conditioner. Spray this onto your wet or towel-dried hair. A leave-in product with ingredients like pro-vitamin B5 can help make your hair smoother and more manageable after just one application.

What happens if I put purple shampoo on brown hair?
Applying purple shampoo to highlighted or light brown hair enhances its shine and richness while reducing brassiness. Simply swap your regular shampoo for a purple one to integrate it into your hair care routine.

Will purple shampoo darken hair?
Purple shampoo won't lighten or darken hair but may leave a slight violet tint if overused, particularly noticeable in silver or white hair, rather than on warmer blondes or darker colors.

Can I use purple shampoo on dark brown hair?
Yes, purple shampoo works to reduce brassiness in dark brown hair just as it does in blonde, helping to maintain vibrancy and shine while preventing color fade.

Can you overdo purple shampoo?
Using purple shampoo too frequently can lead to excessive neutralization of yellow tones, potentially making your hair look darker. It's best used only once or twice a week, not as a regular shampoo replacement.

Using purple shampoo as part of your regular hair care routine ensures that your brown hair stays as vibrant and rich as when it was first colored, making it an indispensable product for anyone with lightened or color-treated brown hair.

Actually Works!

This is the only purple Shampoo I have tried that’s actually able to lighten my hair! I have thick hair in a darker blonde color, and normally after using purple shampoo it looks the same as before. With this one, my hair stylist noticed my hair was lighter, and I didn’t even bring it up! And yes, I follow instructions!

Great product

I color my hair and have tried many products that deal with toning down the orange, but nothing has worked as well as the purple bars for shampoo and conditioner. My hair has never looked or felt better. I love this product.
