What Peppermint Oil Does For Your Skin And How To Apply It

From soothing sunburns to promoting hair growth, peppermint oil has become a staple in beauty and wellness routines. But how do you maximize its benefits while ensuring safe use? This article explores the various ways peppermint oil can enhance your skincare and haircare regimen, and provides practical tips on its application.

Benefits of Using Peppermint Oil for Skin

Rejuvenates Skin

Peppermint essential oil, when integrated into skincare formulations, revitalizes the skin, imparting a sense of freshness and rejuvenation. Its invigorating properties help restore the skin's natural glow and vitality, making you feel more awake and alive.

Reduces Pimples

The antimicrobial and antiseptic properties of peppermint oil make it highly effective in reducing pimples and acne lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, cysts, and active comedones. It works by eliminating the bacteria that cause breakouts, promoting clearer skin.

Provides a Cooling Sensation

Known for its cooling effects, peppermint oil is perfect for soothing sunburns and reducing discomfort from prolonged sun exposure. The menthol in peppermint oil provides an instant cooling sensation that calms irritated and inflamed skin.

Stimulates Blood Flow

Regular use of peppermint oil-enriched oils or serums can significantly improve blood circulation, enhancing skin tone and overall complexion. Better blood flow ensures that skin cells receive ample nutrients, contributing to a healthier, more radiant look.

Controls Odor

The antibacterial properties in peppermint oil help keep the skin and scalp clear of bacteria and unpleasant odors. This essential oil eliminates bacteria that cause odor, leaving your skin and hair smelling fresh and minty.

Regulates Sebum Production

Peppermint oil is beneficial in regulating sebum production, especially for those with oily, combination, or acne-prone skin. Its inclusion in face masks and cleansers ensures that your skin maintains the right level of moisture without becoming overly greasy.

Soothes Inflammation

Peppermint essential oil is renowned for its ability to soothe inflammation, irritation, and itchiness on both the skin and scalp. It promotes wound healing and serves as a natural remedy for bug bites, rashes, hives, and pruritus, offering relief from common skin irritations.

Acts as an Astringent

As a natural astringent, peppermint oil helps to contract skin cells and improve the appearance of pores. It prevents pores from becoming clogged or congested, thereby reducing the occurrence of blackheads and acne.

Enhances Lip Pigmentation

Peppermint oil not only moisturizes lips but also enhances their natural tone by promoting blood circulation in the lip area. It provides a plumping effect, making your lips look fuller and more vibrant, while also giving a refreshing tingle.

Reduces Indigestion

The menthol in peppermint oil helps reduce acidity, cool the stomach, and improve digestion, which in turn can lead to clearer skin. A healthy digestive system often reflects positively on the skin’s condition.

Fights Signs of Aging

Rich in antioxidants, peppermint oil helps combat free radicals that cause premature aging. Consistent use of products containing peppermint oil can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, keeping your skin youthful and firm.

Hydrates and Nourishes

Peppermint oil helps lock in moisture, ensuring that your skin remains hydrated and nourished. This is particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin, as it provides the necessary hydration to maintain a healthy skin barrier.

How to Use Peppermint Oil on Your Skin

Now here’s how you can effectively and safely use peppermint oil on your skin:

  • Dilution is Key

  • Peppermint oil is highly concentrated and should always be diluted with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin. Good carrier oils include coconut oil, jojoba oil, and almond oil. The general recommendation is to mix 2-3 drops of peppermint oil with one tablespoon of carrier oil. This dilution helps prevent skin irritation and ensures that you reap the benefits without any adverse effects.

  • Direct Application

  • For targeted relief, such as soothing muscle pain or calming itchy skin, apply the diluted peppermint oil directly to the affected area. Gently massage the mixture into your skin using circular motions. This method allows the oil to penetrate deeply and provide its therapeutic effects.

  • Peppermint Oil Baths

  • Adding peppermint oil to your bath can provide a full-body treatment. To do this, first dilute 5-10 drops of peppermint oil in a carrier oil. Add this mixture to warm bath water along with Epsom salts if desired. Soaking in this bath will help the oil to evenly disperse and provide a relaxing and rejuvenating experience.

  • Enhancing Hair Products for Scalp

  • Peppermint oil can also be used to enhance your hair care routine. Add a few drops of diluted peppermint oil to your regular shampoo or conditioner. Massage it into your scalp to stimulate blood flow and invigorate your senses. This can help promote a healthy scalp environment and potentially support hair growth.

For a convenient solution, consider using Parrotfish’s Peppermint Shampoo and Peppermint Conditioner. These products already contain peppermint oil and are specially formulated to provide the invigorating benefits of this essential oil, making it simpler for you to enjoy healthier, more vibrant hair.

    Tips for Safe Use

    • Patch Test: Before using peppermint oil extensively, perform a patch test by applying a small amount of the diluted oil to a discreet area of your skin. Wait 24 hours to check for any adverse reactions.
    • Avoid Sensitive Areas: Do not apply peppermint oil near your eyes, inside your nose, or on any sensitive skin areas. It can cause irritation and discomfort.
    • Consult a Professional: If you are pregnant, nursing, or have any underlying health conditions, consult with a healthcare provider before using peppermint oil.

Can you put peppermint oil directly on your skin?

Essential oils are highly potent and should not be applied directly to your skin or scalp. Always dilute them in a carrier oil first. After mixing, perform a patch test on your inner arm to check for any sensitivity or irritation.

What happens if peppermint oil touches your skin?

When applied undiluted, peppermint oil can cause a strong icy/hot sensation, allergic reactions, skin rashes, contact dermatitis, and eye irritation. It's important to always dilute peppermint oil before applying it to your skin to avoid these adverse effects.

    Is peppermint oil anti-aging?

Yes, peppermint oil has anti-aging benefits. The cooling agent menthol in peppermint oil cools down mitochondria and protects them from toxin-induced damage. This makes menthol useful for anti-aging, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory purposes where higher mitochondrial temperatures are common.

Can you put 100% peppermint oil on your skin?

No, peppermint essential oil should not be used undiluted on your skin. Always mix it with a carrier oil to avoid irritation or allergic reactions. Peppermint oil is highly concentrated, and proper dilution is necessary for safe topical application.

    Does peppermint oil tighten skin?

Yes, peppermint oil has unique astringent properties that help tighten and firm the skin, giving it a more youthful appearance. Its refreshing and toning effects make it a popular ingredient in skincare for promoting a firm and smooth complexion.

How to Stop Peppermint Oil from Burning Skin

To quickly relieve the burning sensation caused by peppermint oil, apply a generous amount of coconut or olive oil to the affected area. These oils will dilute the peppermint and should provide fast relief. Avoid using water, as it will not help alleviate the burning.

Peppermint oil offers a versatile and effective solution for many skin and hair concerns. Its cooling, antimicrobial, and astringent properties make it a valuable addition to your beauty routine. It can rejuvenate your skin, reduce acne, or promote a healthy scalp to achieve your goals. Just remember to dilute it properly, conduct a patch test, and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns. Embrace the invigorating benefits of peppermint oil and experience a refreshing boost to your skincare and haircare rituals.

    Best. Duo. EVER.

My family and I are obsessed with the smell, texture, and softness that it leaves our hair after washing. As a blonde, I had to wash my hair once/day or once/two days due to my hair appearing oily after using liquid products, which would then aggravate my scalp; now, I wash my hair once every 3-4 days because my hair maintains shine and softness. For blondies and gray/silver-headed beauties, do yourself a favor and try this pairing.

    Actually Works!

This is the only purple Shampoo I have tried that’s actually able to lighten my hair! I have thick hair in a darker blonde color, and normally after using purple shampoo it looks the same as before. With this one, my hair stylist noticed my hair was lighter, and I didn’t even bring it up! And yes, I follow instructions!

    Good product

I purchased the purple shampoo and conditioner bars & am very pleased with the results. It has definitely toned down the yellowing of my gray hair and does not dry my hair out. I will be ordering again for sure.
