Why Do Natural Soap Bars Get Little White Spots?
If you’ve ever noticed tiny white spots on your natural soap bar, you might have wondered what they are and whether they affect the soap’s quality. The appearance of white spots on natural soap bars is a common occurrence, and while it may seem concerning, it’s usually harmless. In this blog post, we’ll explore the reasons why natural soap bars can develop white spots, what they mean, and whether they impact the soap’s effectiveness.
What Are the White Spots on Natural Soap Bars?
The white spots you see on natural soap bars are often due to a process called soda ash formation. Soda ash is a white, powdery substance that sometimes forms on the surface of soap during the curing process. It’s essentially a reaction between the sodium hydroxide (lye) used in soap making and carbon dioxide in the air. This reaction typically occurs when the soap is exposed to air too soon after being poured into molds.
Another reason for white spots could be the crystallization of certain ingredients, such as shea butter or coconut oil. When the soap cools unevenly or experiences temperature fluctuations, these ingredients can sometimes crystallize, leading to white spots or streaks.
Why Do Natural Soap Bars Develop White Spots?
Several factors can contribute to the development of white spots on natural soap bars:
Related Products
1. Exposure to Air During Curing
- Soda ash forms when soap is exposed to air before it has fully saponified (the process where oils turn into soap). This often happens when soap is left uncovered in a humid environment or if the curing process is rushed.
2. High Humidity Levels
- Humidity can play a significant role in the formation of white spots. When natural soap is made in a humid environment, it is more likely to develop soda ash or other surface discolorations.
3. Temperature Fluctuations
- If the soap cools too quickly or if there are significant temperature changes during the curing process, certain ingredients in the soap can crystallize, leading to white spots.
4. Natural Ingredients
- The use of natural ingredients, such as unrefined shea butter or cocoa butter, can sometimes cause white spots to appear. These ingredients may contain impurities or naturally occurring compounds that can react during the soap-making process, creating white spots or streaks.
Do White Spots Affect the Quality of the Soap?
In most cases, the white spots on natural soap bars are purely cosmetic and do not affect the soap’s quality or effectiveness. Soda ash, for example, is harmless and doesn’t alter the soap’s cleansing or moisturizing properties. Similarly, the crystallization of oils or butters is a natural occurrence and doesn’t impact the soap’s performance.
Are White Spots a Sign of Poor-Quality Soap?
Absolutely not! White spots are a natural and common occurrence in handmade soap, especially those made with natural ingredients. They are often a sign that the soap was crafted using traditional methods and free from synthetic additives. The presence of white spots does not indicate a defect or a lack of quality. Embracing these small imperfections is part of appreciating the beauty of handmade, natural soap.

Let customers speak for us
from 209 reviewsI’m pretty finicky with soap bars but, much like the shampoo/conditioner bars, this exceeded my expectations. If you like citrus black teas like Earl Grey, Lady Grey, or a Breakfast blend then you need to give this soap bar a chance! It produces a rich lather without feeling greasy and doesn’t leave a film-y feeling or residue behind when used (a toss up I’ve come to expect with some oil-based soaps). And the scent! Your whole shower (and you) will smell like a fresh cup of rich and bright tea. I think I have a new favorite for sure in this one! (***This review is not sponsored/paid/etc. I got nothing in return for writing this & expect nothing — except for the Parrotfish team to keep making excellent products, seasonal & otherwise.***)
My hair is soft and hydrated, it's never felt better!
Great product!
This soap bar is quite large, and the scent is refreshing. Seems to have a moisturing effect on my hands. Will definitely buy again.
This stuff is amazing! Best lather of any shampoo bar I've ever used. And the conditioner is nice as well - not so heavy that it weighs down fine hair. Will definitely buy again.
Lasting scent. The scents themselves are calming and delicious
Love this soap bar! The lavender smell is great, not artificial and really relaxing. I have really dry, sensitive skin and the olive oil formulation is great.
This smells so good and lathers so nicely. So easy to use and travel with!
I love this conditioner so much, usually my hair is a pain to brush but this makes it so much easier and smell amazing!!!
It’s solid and sturdy just what I needed
My only regret is that I didn’t review sooner! (Sorry!!!) The contents of this review pertain to the Peppermint Shampoo Bar and the Argon Oil Conditioner Bar.
Hair Type: 2B, almost 2C, and relatively fine.
I have gotten SO MANY compliments on my hair since swapping to your shampoo bars! That I can rest easy knowing I can continue to both afford them AND am supporting a woman owned, environmentally friendly, and very cool business is a huge set of bonuses.
The shampoo & conditioner bars are all 10/10, absolutely recommend. I have now tried all of them, but my favorite combination remains Argon Oil Shampoo Bar & Peppermint Conditioner Bar. I’ve gotten so many compliments on these products from my sisters and guests that it was an obvious solution now that I (finally) have a guest bathroom to stock it with Parrotfish.
I will absolutely be reordering!
I’ve been using Parrotfish’s argon oil shampoo and conditioner for more than a year and I absolutely love it. I’m an old guy with long hair and this stuff keeps my hair soft and smelling good.
seasonal soap bars
I have been wanting to switch to bar shampoo to lower my plastic use and love this option. It works just as well maybe better thank liquid shampoo.
I am thrilled to have a case specifically for my shampoo and conditioner bars when I travel. No more plastic baggies! It is a perfect addition to my travel cases.
